What Should the Green Card Application Photo Look Like?

The applicant participating in the Green Card lottery must include recently taken digital photos of themselves, their spouse, and all children under 21 years old, including legally adopted and stepchildren who do not live with them, in the application.

Children over 21 years old or who are married are not accepted in the application, so their digital photos should not be included in the application.

Group or family photos are not accepted.The photos used must be biometric and clearly identify the applicant.

  • The photo dimensions must be 600×600 pixels.
  • The participant, their spouse, and/or all children must look directly at the camera, with their head neither tilted forward nor to the side, and the portrait must cover 50% of the photo.
  • Photos taken with dark or patterned backgrounds are not accepted. The background behind the person in the photo should be light, preferably white.
  • The person’s face in the photo must be clearly visible.
  • No hats, glasses, or any accessories should be worn in the photo.
  • A headscarf may be worn in the photo as long as the person’s face, ears, and forehead are clearly visible.
  • The uploaded photo must have a color depth of 24-bit, be in JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format, and scanned photos must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch).
